“SPEF: Fueling Excellence in South Pasadena Schools — History, Impact & How to Join the Party”
Origins & Mission
The South Pasadena Educational Foundation (SPEF) was founded in 1979 by concerned parents and community leaders, in response to educational budget pressures faced by the South Pasadena Unified School District (SPUSD). It was incorporated as a 501(c)(3) charity in 1980, and has since been designated by the district as its official private fundraising partner. SPEF for Kids+2GuideStar+2

The Big Party: “Parti Gras”
One of SPEF’s signature moments is its annual gala known as Parti Gras — a lively, themed evening of celebration, auctions, restaurant partners, community gathering and fundraising.
The 2025 edition is scheduled for Saturday, May 17, 2025 at the Arroyo Seco Golf Course, 6:00-11:00 pm. SPEF for Kids+1
In past years, themes have included “Bootleggers’ Ball” (2024) and “A Superhero Celebration” (2025). The South Pasadenan+1
The event features food from local restaurants, live and silent auctions, dancing, drinks, and broad community participation. SPEF for Kids
It serves both as a community builder and as a major fundraiser for SPEF and the local public schools.

Why It Matters to South Pasadena
For families and residents in South Pasadena, SPEF represents something more than fundraising—it’s an expression of community dedication to maintaining high-quality schools, strong programs, and the sense of place that the city is known for (small-town atmosphere, engaged citizens, schools as community hubs). When neighborhoods have a foundation like SPEF actively supporting education, it enhances the overall quality of life and helps reinforce local pride.
